Guided Group Coaching or DIY Creative?

My best friend and I decided that rather than explore Iceland on our own we’d try out a small group tour.

Letting someone else choose hotels, prioritize sites to see, recommend places to eat, etc… plus handle all the details sounded great.

Best decision ever.

Here are my 5 biggest takeaways:

  1. Size matters.

Our small group of 11 traveling in a comfy van was just right.

We didn’t get lost in the shuffle.

We got to know our guide and fellow travelers.

We didn’t have to wait around as 50 people disembarked and climbed back onto a huge motorbus at every stop.

  2. Go with the flow but don’t totally wing it.

Seeing which way the wind takes you can be fun, but we would’ve missed so many spectacular places and moments had we headed out on our own with no plan.

Our tour stops were just the right mix of pre-planned excursions to waterfalls and museums with plenty of room for spur of the moment experiences like a last minute hike down to a crystal clear glacier lake because the timing was just right.

  3. Trust the experts.

Our tour company and local guide had a comprehensive knowledge of Iceland that no amount of googling or travel books could match.

Trusting them to create our itinerary meant we got to visit many “off the beaten path” spots.

Our guide also knew when to shift our schedule for better experiences based on weather and other factors.

This meant we could experience the magic of Diamond Beach covered with icebergs bits that wash ashore and look like crystal diamonds on the black sand beach and increase our odds of seeing rainbows in the waterfalls.

We never would have known to make that call on our own.

I couldn’t help but notice the similarities to what you experience inside my coaching programs rather than going it on your own.

  1. An intimate, personalized coaching container rather than being one in a sea of hundreds ~ or even thousands.

  2. A customized plan to follow that allows space for the non-linear nature of creativity to shine through.

  3. A guide with more than 15 years of experience coaching hundreds of multi-passionate creatives.
